Blepharoplasty : perk up your eyes in 1 week!

Blepharoplasty: the eyelid surgery

that will perk up your face!

Have you ever heard of blepharoplasty? More commonly known as “eyelid surgery,” blepharoplasty is a procedure performed in plastic and aesthetic medicine to rejuvenate the face. The intervention is generally carried out on the upper eyelids and allows for a more dynamic and youthful appearance to your eyes in just a few days.

Is blepharoplasty a painful operation? Absolutely not. Dr. Jean-Thomas Bachelet, a plastic surgeon specialized in aesthetic medicine at Ardentis clinics, tells us more about this quick and painless procedure.

When should one consider blepharoplasty?

With age, it happens that the upper eyelids sag and become somewhat bothersome for individuals experiencing this issue. The gaze appears less lively, less sparkling, often leading to an unpleasant feeling. While the physical discomfort might not be tangible, a simple glance in the mirror can weigh on one’s spirits…

Age is not necessarily the sole factor. It could simply be a malformation of the eyelids. Sometimes, an excess of skin can weigh down the upper eyelids, causing an unattractive effect that impacts the gaze and even the overall appearance of the face.

When should one consult for blepharoplasty?

As soon as you notice sagging or discomfort around the eyelids, it may be wise to schedule an appointment. Dr. Jean-Thomas Bachelet will see you at the Ardentis clinics. He will assess your situation, answer your questions, and explain the entire process of surgical care.

What are the expected results of the surgery?

The objective of the operation is to reduce excess skin, harmonize the volume around the eyelids, and achieve an aesthetic improvement. The surgical procedure may cause postoperative swelling, which diminishes quickly, revealing a rejuvenated look. The scars are very discreet and become less visible in the weeks following the operation.

How to prepare well for the surgery?

Smoking is a factor that worsens operative complications as it delays healing and increases the risk of infection. Therefore, it is strongly advised to quit smoking several weeks before the procedure, if possible, and refrain from resuming cigarette use immediately after the operation.

Taking certain medications is also discouraged, especially those containing aspirin. Dr. Jean-Thomas Bachelet will provide you with specific information during the first appointment.

How does an eyelid surgery procedure unfold?

Blepharoplasty follows three main steps:
1. Preoperative consultation: This is the ideal time to discuss the procedure, understand its benefits, the process of the intervention, and postoperative care practices. Before and after photos are shown to visualize the concrete benefits of the surgery.
2. The surgical procedure: Carried out under local anesthesia in a specialized setting (completely safe and controlled, within the Ardentis clinics), the surgery is painless and typically takes one to two hours at most. The patient can return home on the same day (outpatient procedure).
3. Postoperative recovery: By following a few simple instructions, rapid recovery can be achieved. Want to know what these instructions are? We’ll share them with you just below.

What are the instructions to follow after a blepharoplasty procedure?

After the surgery, you may experience slight discomfort for a few days. Don’t worry; it is entirely normal. To facilitate a quicker recovery, we recommend a rest period of one week (but it is not mandatory).

  • During this resting phase, we suggest you:
  • Regularly apply cold compresses to your eyes for a few minutes, especially during the first two days following the operation.
  • Rinse your eyes with saline solution.
  • Apply vitamin A ointment.
  • Keep your head elevated at night using a pillow.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses (allow your eyes to rest).

You don’t need to memorize all these instructions today; they will be repeated and explained to you after the surgery, before you leave the Ardentis clinic. Also, please note that one week after the procedure, a nurse will visit your home to ensure everything is going well and remove the stitches.

But isn’t this procedure dangerous?

It is a standard surgical procedure with no specific dangers. Complications that may occur are inherent to any surgical operation: anesthesia-related incidents, hematoma, infection, or healing issues. Such cases are rare and not usually problematic.

As for the cost, it ranges from CHF 2’500.- to CHF 4’000.-, all-inclusive. A quote will be provided during the first consultation with Dr. Jean-Thomas Bachelet.
