What is the best dental treatment for receding gums?

What is the Best Dental Treatment for Receding Gums?

Receding gums can be not only unpleasant to look at, but they can also lead to sensitive teeth and other long-term complications. The good news, however, is that there are solutions available. Today a whole range of simple and effective surgical treatments are available to treat receding gums such as soft tissue grafts that can be used to rebuild the affected areas.

Dr Rodrigo Martin-Cabezas, a Specialist Periodontist at Ardentis Dental Clinic talks more about receding gums and how best they can be treated with the best post-operative care available.

What are Receding Gums? Β

Also known as gum recession, receding gums are a visible shrinkage of the gums that reveal the root of the tooth. Beyond being unpleasant to look at, receding gums can cause other complications and discomfort in your daily life. They can cause your teeth to become sensitive to cold, to touch, cause pain when brushing your teeth and the onset of cavities at the root of the tooth…

What causes Receding Gums?

Not everyone is affected by receding gums. Β One cause can be applying too much pressure when brushing your teeth. Β This causes the gums to recede progressively and ends up exposing part of the root of the tooth. Inadequate brushing can allow bacteria to develop which can then lead to gum inflammation and gum shrinkage.

Other common causes are tongue or lip piercings which can lead to these types of complications with your gums. The trauma caused by piercings together with possible friction can gradually damage the gum causing it to retract.

When should I consider consulting a dentist to treat Receding Gums?

You are in the best position to daily monitor the health of your own teeth. Our advice is to regularly check your teeth to identify possible gum recession as early as possible. The earlier treatment is done, the easier it will be to treat receding gums.

If you are experiencing pain or unusual teeth sensitivity, it would be best to book an urgent appointment to assess your situation.

What to expect during Receding Gum surgery?

One of our dentists will examine your gums during the consultation and discuss in detail the best-adapted treatment options available for you. After a small surgical procedure, called mucogingival surgery, the root will then be totally or partially covered again.

The procedure involves β€œsharing” a small amount of skin from your palate and grafting it onto the damaged surface of your gums. This technique gives excellent long-term results and greatly improves the appearance of your gums.
